Engineer Ahmad Omran Taryam, vice president of the Municipal Council of the city of Sharjah, discussed regulation of car washing in a meeting held on Tuesday. No more cleaning cars by unauthorized people in the streets of Sharjah, from now on, car washing will be limited to mall parkings, petrol stations and licensed car cleaning service shops. The fine for violators will be DH250. Another type of fine will be issued to those who cause a great deal of water to gather on the streets and which will be DH500.

Car washers have not taken this too well, they say that their salaries varies between DH500 to DH1000 per month,  and that car washing helps them make extra money, average per month being DH1500, so that they can support their families back home.

A Pakistani worker told Gulf News “If the landlord and tenants don’t object, it shouldn’t be illegal. Most of the washing is done in sandy or gravel lots, so the earth soaks up the water and there’s no mess left.”
