Quick Review

If you want to stand out from the crowd, then the Mercedes G-Class is a great option. However, fuel economy, and affordability are things that you’ll need to sacrifice.

The higher performance G55 AMG model has been discontinued this year, but a new Edition Select lets you have some of the AMG’s styling.

The utilitarian roots of the G-Class are very evident in the cabin. The 1970s heritage is clear, and is just painted over with some modern features. However, it’s all of good quality – as you’d expect for the price. The driving position is high, but legroom is a tad limited throughout – though there’s an abundance of headroom.

Though the cabin is a comfortable place to be, this is a different story once you get out on the road. Here you can feel the old chassis, with body control and heavy steering. The big, square body shape adds up to noise from wind resistance, making driving at higher speeds a tad noisier than usual.

However, once you get off road, the G-Class comes into its element. Giving good competition to the Land Rover Defender, it has the ability to go anywhere. Featuring a low range gearbox, differential locks, high wading depth, and high approach and departure angles makes the G-Class an excellent off-roader.

If you’re looking for a luxury SUV, then the Range Rover Evoque, Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes GL-Class or the Lexus LX 570 all offer high competition, with great on-road driving, performance and usability.

However, if money is no objection and you want a car that turns heads, then the Mercedes G-Class is a rare beast, in a class all of its own.
