Quick Review

If you’re looking for a sophisticated, good looking hatchback for everyday use, then the Volvo C30 is worth a look. Though interior space might be limited for some, it’s still a very capable option.

For 2012, the C30 has some new trim options and added extras including LED headlights. The interior of the car has the familiar Volvo feel that’s common across its range. The cheaper C30 shares a lot of the same features as some expensive models, giving it a feel of quality. However, the boot is small, and you’ll struggle to get more than two adult passengers in the back.

Driving wise, the C30 is one of the best handling Volvos, with grip in the corners and responsive steering. The ride is firm but smooth enough, and the cabin is quiet. Overall, though, the Volvo lacks the performance edge – it offers more sophistication than sportiness.

Engine wise, the excellent T5 offers brilliant acceleration along with good CO2 efficiency.

The Volkswagen GTI can offer the same refinement, though maybe lacks the C30’s aesthetics. Other options include the Ford Focus hatchback in the top trim level, or even a Mini Cooper. If you want more performance, the Subaru Impreza Hatchback is one hot hatch to pay attention to. However, the C30 remains a capable three door hatchback, ideal for everyday use both in town and on the motorway.

As a sophisticated, desirable everyday car, the C30 is a solid choice. If you want a ‘grown up’ hot hatch, it’s definitely worth a look.
