Quick Review

In 2009, the first Kia Soul with the new, current theme was produced. The latest 2013 model of the Kia Soul gets some stylistic updates and a few mechanical changes.

It's quite similar really, slightly more 'bling' conscious, if you like. The headlights are a bit larger, the fog lights too, the grilles, again, pushed to a larger size. From the side it does look very similar. From the rear, you'll spot it's new taillights and bumper.

Inside are a few slightly more significant changes. The cabin now has a UVO entertainment system and also a 7 inch touch screen fitted with satellite navigation and the popular Infinity sound system. But keep in mind that these interior changes are paid extras.

Thankfully, the Kia Soul is offered to people with a range of budgets. Choose between a 1.6 litre, four-cylinder, direct-injected engine, or push the boat out and opt for the 2.0 litre, four-cylinder, multi-port fuel injected version.

Like the recently launched Rio, the Soul has an 'active ECO' system, which will help you cut down on revs and keep your engine running more efficiently. Another useful upgrade you can opt for is the Idle Stop and Go feature, which will automatically shut your engine offer when you're idling at traffic lights.

Because of its short wheelbase, it's a good choice for your sharp corners, and its extra power will get you out of those corners quickly. As an urban commuter, I found it fun to use and easy to control.

For the price-conscious, the 1.6 litre model provides 11.5 km/l in the city, and 14.8 km/l on highways, while the 2.0 litre model is a margin below. 11 km/l in the city, 14.4 km/l on the highway, more than acceptable efficiency, in either case.

It's not the most comfortable and the trunk size is a little small, but it provides a decent drive and it's a serious choice for the budget conscious driver that is concerned with great fuel economy.

Similar models from other brands include Nissan Juke and Honda Jazz.
