Quick Review

The new 2012 BMW 1 Series’ design overhaul has caused a bit of a stir; the front-end is now bolder, the boot is the biggest in its class, and there are a handful of new features. The most exciting among these is the new TwinPower Turbo technology that is used across all engines, and the Blackberry integration through the BMW’s iDrive system. Still, even with a fresh new look, the BMW 1 Series still enjoys the same high-quality build and driveability that previous models had, while suffering from the same lack of style and cramped interior.

As such, it’s hard to recommend the 1 Series as a fully-capable family car. Even with a spacious and accommodating boot, the interior still feels cramped; the headroom in the back is passable, but legroom is a serious issue. Thanks to an overly unforgiving suspension, passengers in the back will find themselves on a cramped, and bumpy ride.

However, it’s on the road where the 1 Series really comes into its element. The new turbocharger really lets the engine shine and the gearbox is still without a match in its class. The 1 Series is a precise, elegantly weighted drive; it dominates in terms of handling, accuracy and balance, and when it comes to build quality, the 1 Series is second to none.
So is the 1 Series for you? It might lack style and a smooth ride, but even with its slightly high price tag this is still the best-driving small family car available. The 2012 1 Series is a great choice for anyone looking for a great driver's car without the impracticality of a sports car.
