Tesla Model Y

Ever since the first Model S hit the streets in 2012, Tesla has become a household name as far as electric cars or EVs are concerned. The American brand under the leadership of tech genius Elon Musk also boosted to lift EVs from a world of ambiguity and dullness, much to the success of the brand that it’s today. At present, Tesla’s Model 3, Model S, and Model X are some of the most talked about electric cars on the market. In fact, and as we all are aware, Tesla often finds it difficult to keep up with the ever-rising demand for their cars.

Now, however, the company has officially unveiled their latest model – the Model Y. The Tesla Model Y is designed as a compact crossover SUV, and it shares much of its underpinnings with the slightly smaller Model 3 sedan. Of course, as you can imagine, the Model Y will be slotted just above the more affordable Model 3 in the brand’s lineup.

As with all of their cars, the Tesla Model Y is most definitely not a slouch as far as performance goes. For example, the top trim Model Y Performance boasts a maximum range of 451 km, top speed of 241 km/h, and can accelerate from naught to 100 km/h in just over 3.5 seconds. To put that kind of acceleration into perspective, the benign looking, seven-seat Tesla Model Y is (on paper) quicker to the ton mark than a Lamborghini Urus. Not to mention the fact that it’s way, way cheaper than the raging bull. Of course, I must admit that I find the Urus to be way, way more attractive.

The exterior styling of the Tesla Model Y is neither particularly artsy nor is it extremely intriguing. It’s like Tesla put the Model 3 and Model X inside a blender and then programmed the end result to look like a 15% and 85% mix of the former and latter. The front fascia will instantly remind you of the Model 3, while the rest of the body looks almost identical to that of the larger Model X SUV. However, unlike the Model X and in order to keep the costs low, the Model Y doesn’t ship with those fancy falcon doors.

As for the interior of the Tesla Model Y, it generally mimics the design and layout of the Model 3. This means that it’s minimalistic enough without being void of interesting gadgets and computer wizardry. As part of its interior features, you’ll get a massive panoramic glass roof, 15-inch touch-infotainment display, leather upholstery, and premium audio system. Also, the Model Y doesn’t come with any traditional car keys per say. Instead, most of the car’s basic functions can be handled using Tesla’s available smartphone app. This app will allow the user to lock & unlock the doors, preset the climate control system, locate the car, and even set a maximum speed limit if you don’t trust your car in the hands of someone else.

The Tesla Model Y will also be available with optional seven seats, although I doubt any adult can actually sit there for any length of time. The Model Y will be made available in four different versions/trims; namely – Standard Range, Long Range (RWD), Long Range (AWD), and Performance (AWD). The base trim, i.e. the Standard Range will start at USD 39,000, while the top-of-the-line Performance variant will cost around USD 60,000. Sales are set to commence somewhere in late 2020 for the higher spec versions of the Model Y, whilst the Standard Range base version should be out in 2021.
