Rolls-Royce and Bentley have for long, been harangued as paradigms of luxury. Built to such exquisite detail, these cars were the epitome of luxury, refinement, space and the consideration which a buyer in this esoteric Monopsony market considers important-exclusivity. The bespoke designs, hue shades which can withstand a high degree of wear and tear, powerful and hushed engines, these are just some aspects which made them so obnoxiously desirable that we have been dreaming with open eyes to own such intricate examples of craftsmanship.

Of late, an old name resurrected by Mercedes-Benz some years back has been making headlines in the automotive industry with cars that can stand courageously besides these stellar icons. It’s Maybach. After the runaway success of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and great appreciation from the critics for its Mercedes-Maybach GLS, here is its third shot at the upper-luxury segment with the Mercedes-Maybach EQS concept. It is very close to production and gives insights about how the brand’s future is going to appear like keeping core luxury traits intact but also allowing modern trends to fuse in seamlessly.

Design

One gaze at the car and one is expected to start hovering over the signature Maybach design cues. It follows the brand’s latest ‘purpose design’ philosophy. The dual-tone colour for the exterior of red and blue, the long vertical lines on the grille which is closed to denote its EV credentials and those chunky wheels are some of the traits synonymous with every Maybach. Angry looking bit is the chrome garnishing near the fog lamp area which imparts an in your face charm. The diamond blocks framed with a fine-knit mesh of the Maybach emblem on the headlights is a remarkable feature that will help illuminate the road better than standard headlamps on other cars.

Similar to the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, it flanks bulky overhangs on either side. To make sure even those not familiar with the brand recognize it, there is the ubiquitous Maybach insignia on the side after the C-pillar. However, a discrete design bit is the window glass silhouette which intentionally looks chunky to give it solid road presence.

Its rear will remind one of the EQC as the single piece swept-back LED lamps ode to it. A unique detail is the glass area which is apparently sunken for the roof to pretend as a spoiler. The chrome-plated pinstripe at front and rear is another hallmark feature of the car and makes it appear posh and tautly finished.

Interior

The designers at Mercedes-Benz knew that they weren’t crafting the cockpit of just any car, but one of the early Maybach models. As a result, the interior that this concept displays is regal, but also as contemporary as possible keeping ‘futuristic’ as the main keyword here. The theme of virtual interior is followed in such a way that a lounge like experience is bequeathed to the occupants. This has been made possible via ergonomically designed front seats that liberate optimum levels of legroom, a floating console theme to house in the brand’s latest and class-apart MBUX infotainment system and keys that are as sparse as possible. A chunky and stubby steering wheel making it easier to grip and a subtle shade of blue for the ambient lighting are salient features of this car. Arousing opulence is Maybach insignia on the seats which emanates exclusivity and fine detailing gone to justify its high worth.

It features a “faux-fur” covering for the floor which lets the occupants float their legs into it and offers relaxation to them.

While the front has been thoughtfully laid out, one would want to give as many brownie points as possible for its rear compartment design which sports a vase outline to inhale the beauty of exquisite workmanship. Captain seats with individual entertainment screens offer a soothing and luxurious experience that can be a great requiem.

To make sure its most finicky honchos are also sufficed, there is a storage compartment where utensils can be stored or equipment such as folding tables, box of champagne goblets and a refrigerated compartment. This is complemented with rose-gold coloured accents which create an ideal luxurious feel on the inside.

The 12.3” OLED display for the front passenger gives them their individual display and control area. The advanced MBUX infotainment system provides customized infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. The system offers charge and range data through the EQ menu for ease. This platform can be tweaked and used for another SUV in future too. The car can stretch for 600 Km before it runs out of charge.

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS concept is a luxurious and futuristic take intimating how the brand’s and its cars’ future is likely to appear. Its unique and surprising feature is that it seeks to appeal to modern buyers while keeping the core traits of the brand from getting askew.
