We have traveled to the picturesque and breathtaking landscape of Spielberg, Austria to test drive the long-awaited, all-new 2019 Jeep Wrangler. To give you the complete picture, this review will not only cover all of the basics such as prices, specifications, features, and technology relating to this Jeep but also provide you with some background of the Wrangler and my own thoughts on this legendary off-roader. Therefore, by the time you are through with this review, you will be able to decide whether this is the right 4x4 for you or not.
But first, with more connectivity, comfort, and convenience; is the new 2019 Jeep Wrangler really the right choice for the pure, blue-blooded off-road enthusiasts amongst you? I am sure that many of you are just as intrigued and looking forth to the answer. So, keep reading and soon enough, you will have it.
Let us recap:
Jeep has been around since 1941 and so far, sold well over 5 million cars in a span of 77 years (or over 28,000 days). This basically means that the American brand has been able to move 177.9 units per day! Of course, this is their global sales number and not just from the GCC region. Shifting that many cars in a day just in the GCC would have been really amazing, albeit quite difficult. Anyway, whichever way you look at it, that is a lot of cars sold worldwide.
From what I could sense and feel, the all-new 2019 Jeep Wrangler is here to make history by leveraging (and rightfully so) from its long, deep-rooted legacy built over decades of experience, capability, trust, and a fair share of fan following. Look at it this way; it is like the freshly updated, better educated, well-rounded and more responsible grandson who will now take over the torch from his grandfather and take the company forward. At long last, there is excitement, hope, and a promise that the new kid on the block will now raise the bar even further and for the better, thus leading the company towards a brighter future.
Anyway, enough with the introduction and history I think. So, without further introduction, let’s get into what really matters. The tangibles of this all-new 2019 Jeep Wrangler.
From the Outside:
As for the exterior, you cannot really notice any vast changes or differences between the earlier JK series and this, the all-new JL series of the Jeep Wrangler. I will say it is more of a restyling job as opposed to an all-new model, and thus the design language doesn’t really take a steep departure when compared to the Wrangler JK.
However, that is not to say that Jeep has been lazy or that they have not made any changes at all. The beltline of the new model has been lowered, thus allowing for larger windows which permit better outward visibility. The new Wrangler can also be had with LED headlamps, LED daytime-running lights (DRLs), LED fog lamps and of course, LED taillamps.
The famous seven-slotted Jeep grille now has the outer slats intersecting with the headlamp housing. This design element is the American carmaker’s way of paying homage to the old but legendary CJ models from the mid-‘40s. Rounding off the exterior design changes are new choices of 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels, and body-colored sports bars with integrated grab handles, and are welded directly to the body.
I believe the decision to stick with minimal design changes on the new 2019 Jeep Wrangler was something the American marque did on purpose and in my opinion, they did the right thing. You really don’t want to mess around and drastically alter the shape of one of the most iconic models ever made. Instead, all you need to do as a carmaker is tweak a few things here and there, and make the vehicle even better than what it already was. Despite the nip & tuck, the new 2019 Jeep Wrangler very much retains a silhouette that can be recognized from a distance.
The cabin of the 2019 Jeep Wrangler is where you will notice the majority of the changes that have been carried out, and it is kind of a big deal. After going through some of the press releases here and there, I thought it was not going to be that big a deal as Jeep had stated, but boy was I wrong! With the 2019 model, Jeep has upgraded the Wrangler to a whole new level. As far as I am concerned, sitting in the previous model felt a bit uncomfortable, as the SUV was much too harsh and the general fit & finish also left much to be desired.
However, with this new model, things are exactly the opposite. In fact, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler welcomes those who want comfort, connectivity, and good quality materials. Better still, it delivers on all of these without compromising on the Jeep legacy. This means that even while you feel cosseted enough in the cabin, you still don’t lose out on the fact that you are very much in a Jeep. That, according to me, is a job well done!
The all-new 2019 Jeep Wrangler comes with automatic climate control, an engine stop-start button with weather-proof surrounds, leather seats with optional heating function, a 7-inch LED driver multi-information display, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, LED ambient lighting, a standard 7-inch or an optional 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, and media charging & connectivity ports among other features.
Along with some convenience features, Jeep has also included some really useful safety features in the new 2019 Jeep Wrangler. These include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path traffic detection, rear parking sensors with a rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM), and four airbags as standard.
Trim levels and Price:
The 2019 Jeep Wrangler will be available as a 2-door (Wrangler) and 4-door (Wrangler Unlimited) avatars, and in three trim levels. These trims are Sport, Sahara, and fully-loaded Rubicon. But now, all three trims in the GCC will come with an enhanced version of the tried and tested 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 petrol engine. This powerplant puts out 285 horsepower and 353 Nm of torque, while transmission chores are handled by an 8-speed automatic. And as per Jeep’s statement, this improved drivetrain is now 15% more fuel-efficient than the one found on the previous Wrangler.
When it comes to the starting price in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Sport (2-door) kick-starts the range at AED 132,000, while the fully-loaded Rubicon (2-door) trim can go all the way up to approximately AED 189,000. The Wrangler Unlimited Sport will start at AED 172,000, and the top-of-the-range Rubicon X will come in at just over AED 225,000. Of course, just as before, you can spend more if you want to customize your Wrangler according to your specifications with some of the more than 180 MOPAR-developed accessories.
When Will it be Available?
At the time of writing, it is expected that the all-new 2019 Jeep Wrangler should hit the showroom floors in UAE and Saudi by the end of July 2018. However, the wait will be a little longer for those in other GCC countries. In all cases, those of you in the rest of the GCC should be able to lay your hands on the new Wrangler by mid-August, 2018.
Now to answer the most important question. The one you all have been waiting with baited breath for so long. So, if you remember my first question: - “with more connectivity, comfort, and convenience, is the new 2019 Jeep Wrangler really the right choice for the pure, blue-blooded off-road enthusiasts amongst you?” The answer to this question in one word - yes! However, there is a lot more to it than just a simple yes or a no. Let me explain what I mean by that. So, despite the new changes, tweaks, and additions made to it, the new 2019 Jeep Wrangler stays true to its predecessor in terms of its sheer off-road capabilities. In fact, the 4x4 has actually gotten better, big time. Just like before, you can confidently throw this car into any environment or terrain, and it will see you through without much of a struggle.
Having said that, the most important factor is that now this tough, capable Jeep has become a lot more comfortable and convenient to live within everyday life. Meaning, you should feel absolutely fine if you just want to go on some normal road trip with your family or friends. With its newfound "comfiness" in the 2019 Wrangler, Jeep is perfectly capitalizing not only on its traditional no-nonsense off-road audience but also acknowledging and welcoming an audience from an all-new market segment. Well done, Jeep. Well done, indeed.
