Hyundai Genesis Coupe Discontinued

It’s been a long road for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and combined with year after year of dwindling sales figures, the Korean brand has decided to pull the plug on the striking coupe. The Genesis Coupe, which began production in 2009, was the brand’s first rear-wheel-drive coupe and was based on the Genesis platform.

Not intended as a successor to the front-wheel-drive Hyundai Tiburon, the Genesis Coupe marked a milestone in the brand’s history and was targeted at the likes of the Infiniti G37 Coupe.  Having debuted at the New York International Auto Show in 2008 with a brave display of power slides and burnouts, the Genesis Coupe was the most powerful coupe in the brand’s line-up.

The 3.8-liter V6 engine which powered the units sold in the UAE, churned out 300 horsepower and 361 Nm of torque through a 7-speed automatic transmission. And while those figures meant it was not as powerful as the sedan it was based on, the Coupe didn’t exactly lack grunt.

While highly modified versions of the Genesis Coupe were displayed at global events such as SEMA, the Korean Coupe was unable to shake up the sports-car world as the brand had initially anticipated. Although Hyundai’s new luxury division, Genesis, is expected to churn out a coupe in the future, it is unlikely that it will do so before 2020.

So while the Hyundai Genesis Coupe prepares for its hiatus, it would make sense to purchase one and hold on to a Korean relic.
