Quite recently, Ford has been trying out some very cool tech. First it showcased its connected traffic light system (read all about it by clicking on the blue words) and now it has introduced its geofencing tech that will automatically slow cars down to the speed limit.

Not slowing down according to the speed limit is a very big problem, whether it is because we sometimes ignore the speed limit board or otherwise, it can cause fatal accidents. So Ford’s clever piece of tech will automatically match the seed of the car according to the prescribed speed in virtual zones, without any kind of input from the driver.

This groundbreaking tech is obviously very complex. The Blue Oval’s Geofencing Speed Limit Control relies on a number of special softwares and GPS tracking. Using the software the vehicle will be receiving information about the speed limit in the area it is going to reach. The vehicle’s position will be identified via GPS tracking and then it will automatically slow itself down.

Ford is working on polishing the Geofencing Speed Control in Cologne, Germany where Ford's City Engagement team and city officials in both Cologne and Aachen are helping the American carmaker. Ford says that drivers will be able to override this system if they wish to and later drivers will be able to set up their own custom virtual zones with different speeds.

“Connected vehicle technology has the proven potential to help make everyday driving easier and safer to benefit everyone, not just the person behind the wheel,” said Michael Huynh, manager of City Engagement Germany at Ford of Europe. “Geofencing can ensure speeds are reduced where – and even when – necessary to help improve safety and create a more pleasant environment.”

“Our drivers should benefit from the latest technical support, including geofencing based assistant systems that enable them to keep to the speed limits and fully concentrate on the road,” said Dr. Bert Schröer, Head of Vehicle Technology and Mobility, AWB, a waste disposal company which is involved in Ford’s trial with the City of Cologne. It shows that people are already looking forward to this genius tech.
