For decades, the Honda Civic has held top positions on any compact-car list and is a favorite among shoppers for really good reasons. It has been well-known for its reliability, spacious and well-built interior, and fuel-efficient yet lively four-cylinder engines. I’ve been driving this 2017 Civic now for 10 days and let me tell you, boy does it still deserve to be a top choice in its class!

I really like the design of the new 2017 Honda Civic. The low hood, the aggressively-styled front end, and the pronounced wheel arches give this sedan a very sporty look. Compared to its previous iteration, this new 2017 model is actually lower, wider and longer. The version that I’m driving also comes with nice looking daytime running lights, fog lights, LED turn signals on the door mirrors and 16” Alloy wheels. Though the design up front is nice, I especially love what Honda has done at the back of the new Civic. The brave design choice of using a unique curved shape for the backlights deserves some respect. On the other hand, I don’t know what they were doing when deciding to stick that chrome bar on the nose of this car. I really wish they would have stuck to the black treatment, instead, just like we see on the Civic SI.

From the inside, the cabin is simple yet solidly put together. It gives you that feeling of the traditional Honda reliability that we all love so much. Though there is a plentiful use of plastics, as is expected from this class of cars, there is also some use of soft-touch materials on the dash. There are lots of storage spaces dotted throughout the cabin to store your belongings. I especially liked the small square area just ahead of the gear lever where you can not only place your phone but also have it charging using the USB port. Honda has also designed special cutouts to thread the charging cable through to your phone, so there are no messy cables hanging about the place.

The seating position for the driver is low and feels sporty, but I have had some issues with these seats during long drives since they lack any kind of adjustment for the lumbar support. In the back, space is decent and I had no trouble dropping my kids to school every day. That said, I feel that for taller people, headspace will be a bit of an issue because of that sloping roof design. The boot though is one of the largest its class and you also have the option of folding down the back seats to fit longer items.

The equipment level in this version of the 2017 Honda Civic we tested is quite minimal. You get remote ignition, keyless entry, push-button start, a regular sound system with Bluetooth and USB, climate control, electric parking brake with an auto-hold option (which you need to turn on every time you switch on the car for some reason), steering-mounted controls for the sound system and Bluetooth, cruise control, rear AC vents, and rear parking sensors. The car we are testing is powered by a 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder petrol engine. It produces 123 HP and 151 Nm of torque, delivering power to the front wheels through a Continuously Variable Transmission or CVT. Let me start with the good things you get from this setup. The fuel efficiency is impressive a car such as this, and I averaged 10.2 L/100 km during my time with this car. Most of my driving during the 10 days that I have had it was mostly done within the city.

When driving this Civic at regular city speeds, although the engine noise is minimal, the wind and tire noise is on the higher side. When you try to accelerate, you will hear two distinct sounds - the engine revving its guts out and the drone of that CVT. I don’t know if the transmission is trying to generate electricity as the sound coming from it bears a close resemblance to the sound that a power generating turbine makes. I found the brakes and the overall stopping power to be decent. However, there was a noticeable judder every time I tried slowing down from any speed above 80 km/h. I am unsure if this is a defect only affecting this particular car, or if it is more widespread. Possibly the former. The steering wheel feels sharp but it lacks proper feedback, though I haven’t had any issues with it during my daily drives. The suspension is also decent and comfortable enough even on some bumpy roads.

The Honda Civic will always be one of the top cars that you can pick in its class. That said, it now faces a lot more competition from the likes of the Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra, and the Kia Cerato. Before you buy this particular variant of the Civic which is currently on sale for AED 65,900, my advice to interested buyers is to make sure that you test drive all the three different engines choices on offer with the new Civic. The 2017 Honda Civic can be had with a 1.6-liter engine (that I drove), a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, or the more powerful 1.5-liter turbo petrol unit. Before you sign on the dotted line and drive away in your new Civic, make sure you check out all the power-plants that are available for this car.
