All-new Mercedes G-Class breaks cover with more power and a mild hybrid system

The Mercedes G-Class has its very own cult following. While Merc’s offerings like the C,E,S class ooze opulence, the G-Class combines that opulence with a word that is less associated with the German brand - off-roading. This is precisely the reason why the G-Class has a special place in Merc’s product portfolio.

Powertrain Evolution: From V8 to Mild-Hybrid V6

The G-Class has received a refresh and there’s some bad news; the base G550 has parted ways with the V8 for a new turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with mild-hybrid assist. The trend of electrification has finally reached the G-Class but worry not, the mild-hybrid V6 gives the new G550 27 more total hp than its predecessor. 

The big brother, the AMG G63, retains its old-gold 577-hp twin-turbo V8 but, just like the G550, there is mild hybrid assistance on offer in the form of a 48-volt hybrid system. Both models also get better aero.

There’s loads of tech on offer for both the models. For the off-road nerds, a special set of gauges can be displayed on the instrument cluster to provide details such as steering angle, altitude, and vehicle position. The 360-degree camera system has been updated and can even display a view of what's under the SUV. Mercedes calls this feature "Transparent Hood."

Luxurious Interiors

The interior is as good as it gets with the super smooth MBUX infotainment coming with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And there’s more, the G-Class gets ‘climate controlled’ front cupholders (whatever that means, seems like proper witchcraft though), a wireless charging pad and 11.6-inch touchscreens for rear passengers. 

Don’t think that all these creature comforts mean the G-Class lacks the off-road prowess of previous models. It still has 9.5 inches of ground clearance with the G550 also getting three mechanical differential locks.

Off-Road Mastery

The G63 AMG can be bought with even more off-road features with AMG Active Ride Control giving the SUV better ride comfort, less body roll with hydraulic roll stabilization and adjustable adaptive damping and AMG Offroad Package Pro.

Production of the all-new G-Class is set to start soon with Mercedes remaining coy about the prices.
