Volvo has always been somewhat an odd choice for an automobile in this region. This is because Volvos were never considered budget friendly nor were they considered premium. They were stuck in the middle with new clear direction. However, thanks to their new owners Geely, they are picking up steam and the first new creation is the XC90.

Key Features:
Engine 2.0 liter
Transmission 8-speed auto
Power 320 BHP / 400 Nm
Top Speed 240 km/h
Starting Price AED 300000

Exterior

When this car was first launched in front of the media, it was a winner. After decades of minimal changes to its fleet design, Volvo finally did the unthinkable by totally revolutionizing the design and giving everyone a peak into the design of the future. And as a motoring journalist, I became a fan. It is subtle but no way outdated. It is a design that is completely different from competitors and I love it. There are those headlights that resemble T and that large front grille. All in all, XC90 is brilliant.

Interior & Safety

The interior cabin is a delight. The design is minimal and clean from one end to the other. It looks like a spaceship from the inside as everything is controlled by the big iPad-looking touchscreen in the middle. Other than that, soft touch material everywhere with a generous dose of leather and metal. The interior space is plenty for 7 people. Though, kids will be better suited for the third row seating.  The intuitive touchscreen is easy to use if you are smartphone user. The test car was the ‘Inscription’ trim so it was fully loaded with stuff such as 19 speaker audio, door sill lighting, head up display, 4 zone a/c etc. As for the safety, Volvo is the king of safe vehicles and XC90 is no less. You will find auto braking, driver attention assist, BSD / RCTA / LDW, road sign detection, lots of airbags and adaptive cruise.

Drive

Volvo ditched their older engines for a small 2.0 liter solution. This small engine is coupled with a supercharger as well as a turbocharger to produce a mind boggling 320 BHP and 400 Nm of torque. Add to that a super smooth 8 speed transmission and AWD and the car is able to shoot from 0-100 in under 7.5 seconds. The Volvo isn’t meant to be a fun drive as such and I personally would like to have a bigger engine for that extra push. But the XC90 rides so comfortably well that other things are simply forgotten thanks to that air suspension. Overall, very well done.

Verdict

The XC90 is meant to be a city cruiser. And, it does the job the best way possible.
