BMW Group partners with Intel and Mobileye to manufacture autonomous vehicles

BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye recently announced that a fleet of approximately 40 autonomous BMW vehicles will be on the roads by the second half of 2017, demonstrating the significant advancements made by the three companies towards fully autonomous driving.

Revealed at a podium discussion at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the companies further explained that the BMW 7 Series will employ cutting-edge Intel and Mobileye technologies during global trials starting in the U.S.

Six months since the incubation of the partnership, the companies have developed a scalable architecture that can be adopted by other automotive developers and carmakers to pursue state of the art designs and create differentiated brands.

"Making autonomous driving a reality for our customers is the shared ambition behind our cooperation with Intel and Mobileye. This partnership has all the skills and talent necessary to overcome the enormous technological challenges ahead and commercialize self-driving vehicles,” stated Klaus Fröhlich, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG for Development.

As part of the partnership, the BMW Group will be responsible for driving control and dynamics, while Intel will be accountable for high-performance computing elements, and Mobileye for its high-performance EyeQ5 computer vision processor.

BMW iNEXT

The BMW iNEXT, which will be introduced in 2021, will be the foundation for the BMW Group’s autonomous driving strategy. Following the iNEXT, a range of highly automated models from all BMW Group brands are expected to follow.
